South Asia Initiative Faculty Grants

The South Asia Initiative accepts application for funding from Harvard University Faculty working in fields related to South Asia for summer 2010 or AY 2012-2013.
The purpose of these grants is to promote South Asian studies across the university and to stimulate disciplinary and interdisciplinary research.

Eligibility: All applications must ordinarily be led by one or more permanent members of the Harvard University faculty, at the assistant, associate, or full professional rank who will be continuing in that capacity at Harvard for the duration of the project, in addition to personally taking part in the activities sponsored by the grant.

Applications are due on Friday, February 17, 2012 by 3:00 pm.

Submissions are sought in the three following categories:

  • Travel grants to research locations (a maximum of $5,000) – Preference will be given to tenure-track faculty
  • Individual research grants (a maximum of $7,500) – Funding will be available for individual research projects and may be used for expenses such as travel and research assistance. Funds may not be used for salary replacement or to cover expenses for publication or manuscript preparation, such as subventions or indexing.
    • Collaboration research grants (a maximum of $10,000) – Funding will be available for collaborative research projects involving two or more faculty. Inter-departmental and Inter-school collaboration is encouraged. Funds may be used for expenses such as travel and research assistance, as well as workshops directly related to the promotion of scholarly research. Funds may not be used for salary replacement or to cover expenses for publication or manuscript preparation, such as subventions or indexing.

    Applicants will receive an e-mail confirmation when their proposal is received.

    Candidates will be notified by decisions by early April. Faculty Grant recipients will be expected to provide a brief report upon completion of their project to the SAI Steering Committee summarizing the work made possible by this grant.
